Be smart - hire a designated driver for any occasion when you "might"
be consuming alcohol, locally or at some establishment, event or venue,
anywhere in New York State, any of the New England states, or elsewhere.
Even if you're the toughest macho heavy drinker, or a moderate drinker,
or someone who only drinks once in a while, in a partying atmosphere
you can lose track or miscalculate, and feel fine, but be well over the legal
BAC limit.
Even if you might be able to drive home okay, all it takes is another drunk
or negligent driver hitting you, or just an unexpected failure of a taillight,
or an overly eager cop pulling a pretextual stop to boost his/her numbers,
or similar thing to occur, and the nightmare begins.
There are many occasions, events, and situations throughout the year, when you
may also need to protect yourself, and your friends, such as:
__ bar hopping, clubbing, or just out for dinner somewhere
__ day or night parties at any location
__ sporting events (pro and college)(basketball, hockey, baseball, football, soccer, etc.)
(see FOOTNOTE 1 below)
__ concerts and music festivals
__ brewery, winery or distillery visits
__ bachelor and bachelorette parties
__ weddings, funerals, etc.
There are also those holiday or other dinners with the in-laws or family members
who you can't stand being around. You'll be drinking for sure to get through all that!
Additionally, while recreational marijuana may now be legal in New York and some
adjoining states, smoking weed (or otherwise using marijuana, hashish or other drugs)
and driving is never a good idea, even if you're not drinking.
With a DUI or similar/related offense in New York or in any state to which you might
travel, you’d be looking at endless thousands in legal fees, court fines, possible jail time
(even for a first-timer, depending on which judge or town justice hears the case), a huge
spike in your insurance premiums, an adverse hit to your credit rating, and damage to
your job and career.
Worse yet, if by chance you hit someone and cause major personal injury damages which
exceed your insurance coverages, you could be liable for massive dollar amounts far
and above your insurance coverage limits (varies by state).
It would be smart (and cost-efficient considering the aforementioned dire consequences)
to hire me (well in advance of the occasion or event) to be your designated driver for a
meager $17-20 per hour, sometimes depending on the size of your group and the vehicle
to be driven, with a usual minimum of 4-6 hours, depending on my initial distance to get
to you.
With particular reference to sporting events, concerts, music festivals, etc., if you can afford
the sky-high ticket prices, and/or the price of the alcohol, you can afford me. Additionally, one
would hope that the rest of your crew would be willing to pitch in and share the expense. Why
should they have all the fun while you have to stay sober?
You would be providing the vehicle, for a few reasons. Mine isn't very comfortable. It has a
few mechanical issues. Even if it was in the best of shape, I would not risk someone in your
group getting sick or otherwise staining the interior of my car. No amount of money is worth
my having to clean up afterwards. Also, see FOOTNOTE 2 below.

FOOTNOTE 1: I can even drive you and your group for a multi-state or multi-venue
stadium or arena tour (for example, see the Yankees on a Saturday and the Mets on a
Sunday, with a stay overnight in NYC or north Jersey). I could do the same during
football season (for example, catch a college game on a Saturday and a pro game on
Sunday, with your favorite tailgating vehicle pre-loaded with all the food, beverages
and supplies). On a grander note, think about a vacation-time cross-country trip in
a van or RV, owned or rented, visiting multiple baseball stadiums in, for example, the
Midwest - Chicago, St, Louis, KC, etc., with me doing all the driving, while you
party the whole trip.
FOOTNOTE 2: While you may think you want to hire a driver who does provide
his/her vehicle as well as the driving service, that driver may not have the required
state or local livery license and registration, nor the required enhanced auto policy,
to do so. A typical auto policy excludes all coverage for the driver (and all of his/her
passengers) in any “For Hire” arrangement. Of course, if I drive you in your own
vehicle, your policy will cover everybody. Additionally, if you were to hire such
a driver who provides the vehicle, how do you know how safe it is? You know your
vehicle is safe, but you don't know whether that other person's vehicle is safe.
