Small Weeping Buddha Wood Carved Figure 1.5”
Found these 30 years ago wandering through an estate sale. The owner received from his parents so it's quite old.
1. FASTING STARVING BUDDHA Size: 7"H x 3"W x 3"D $50
This a detailed rendering of the "Fasting Buddha" with visible ribs and protruding shoulders.
Chinese Elder Buddhism Boxwood Wood Carving Skinny Arhat ascetic monk
(Some age separation of wood on the back of head/neck, base/foot, right upper pants leg - see photos.)
NOTE: Fasting Buddha Shakyamuni 3rd–5th century. After reaching enlightenment at Bodhgaya, Shakyamuni meditated and fasted for forty-nine days. Thus, showing him as an emaciated renouncer relates to his enlightenment and his status as a yogic ascetic who has ultimate control over his body.
2. Small WEEPING BUDDHA Wood Carved Figure Size: 1.5"H x 1.5"W x 1.5"D $15
Another detailed carving of Buddha WEEPING, curled into a seated ball with his head buried in his hands.
Made from a single piece of wood, it is quite small and is to be held in cradled hands.
I am not sure of type of wood but possibly teak? It is a neat piece and rare to find one in such a small size.
NOTE: One interpretation says that there is "so much pain and suffering in the world, Buddha weeps so we don’t have to." Another tale tells about a warrior who fought a masked opponent only to discover after defeating him that his opponent was his own long-lost son. By holding this figurine, one can transfer his own pain to the character while also consoling the him as they empathize with the pain. It is quite an interesting and sensitive interpretation.
