Antique TIN CANDLE BOX, 19th Century Primitive, Hanging PIERCED TIN
Candle boxes were used up until the 19th century to store candles, attached to walls so out of reach of rats, mice or other vermin. These days often used for a mailbox.
They were made of wood or metal and generally rectangular or cylindrical in shape, usually with a lid. Earlier 18th century candle boxes are sometimes "japanned" (a decorative technique where a glossy, durable finish, originally mimicking Asian lacquerwork)
