Everywhere we turn, we see children in need. More than anything, children need caring mentors who are willing to share their guidance, maturity, and patience. Compeer for Kids offers volunteers the opportunity to change the lives of children ages 7-12 who are living with social or emotional challenges. Compeer for Kids has an after school program where children receive help with homework, have a daily meeting, eat a nutritious snack, and participate in activities ranging from arts and crafts to assertiveness building skills to monthly trips. Compeer for Kids offers children the opportunity to express themselves positively and in a constructive manner with empathetic staff and volunteer support. Volunteers can visit during the program hours and interact with children as well as participate in “1 to 1 Match” activities where the volunteer spends 4 hours a month with a child and takes them into the community to socially interact by going to the movies, out for ice cream, to the museum, and more!
The Capital District Compeer Program is a volunteer run program aimed to help adults and children living with and recovering from mental health and/or emotional challenges develop lasting social interaction and community integration. We have our popular "1 to 1 Match Program" where volunteers spend 4 hours a month with a child or adult and simply "be a friend" to them by going out for coffee, walks, movies, eating out, and more. We also have a popular "Skillbuilders Program" where a volunteer shares their skill, hobby, or talent with other volunteers and consumers in a group setting for 1-2 hours. Compeer supplies the materials. Some past Skillbuilders have included growing indoor houseplants, antique coin collecting, caving, creative/therapeutic arts, and a community garden. The options are endless. We also have monthly social activities including movies, holiday celebrations, bingo, bbq's, and more! Participation in any Compeer event counts towards the 4 hours per month for 1 to 1 matches! Volunteers are trained and supported by empathetic staff. View our websites www.myspace.com/capitaldistrictcompeer and www.compeer.org, respond to this ad, or call 518-462-1094 x274 for more info! You'll learn so much about life!

Forte International is looking for a temporary host family for a kind hearted Chinese girl over the winter holidays. She would be coming into Albany on December 19th and staying until January 6th. During this time she would like to spend the holidays with a true American family and experience a new side of American culture.
For this stay, she would only require a bed to sleep in within a private room, meals three times a day, and a great American experience. In return for this hospitality, we would be prepared to compensate the host family $400 for the duration of the stay. This is an ideal way to open up your home and heart to a student of another culture!

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Research Study (Albany, NY)

There is a new clinical research that may be of interest to you. The study is for men and women who have Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is also known as “hardening of the arteries”. In PAD, the inside of the blood vessel becomes narrow and blood flow is reduced. PAD affects about 12 million people in the US. It can lead to serious health problems such as stroke, heart attack, or amputation. Early symptoms of PAD may include cramping, or pain in the legs and heavy or tired legs while exercising or at rest. Only about one third of all people with PAD feel pain. Most people with PAD have no symptoms at all.

Stents are commonly used in blood vessels to improve blood flow. DURABILITY II is a research study that will test the safety and use of a particular stent called the PROTÉGÉâ EverFlexä Stent System (EverFlex Stent) to improve blood flow in the leg and foot compared to balloon angioplasty. All patients who meet the study criteria and who provide informed consent will undergo angioplasty followed by stenting using the EverFlex stent. You will be asked to return for a visit at 30 days, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years.

This study may be right for you if you:
· Are an adult with narrowing in a major leg artery
· Are able to attend clinic visits in your area
· Meet other study criteria

The Arts Center of the Capital Region is holding their 3rd annual "Fat Saturday" fundraising event on Saturday, February 20, 2010. "Fat Saturday" is a Mardi Gras themed event held at Revolution Hall, in Troy, NY. And this year our amazing volunteers are aiming to make it the most spectacular "Fat Saturday" we've held yet. Do you have a fun or unusual talent that you wouldn't mind sharing to help raise money for the Arts Center? If so please reply with a brief description or video of your spectacle-making talent.

About The Arts Center:
Over the course of its nearly 50-year history, The Arts Center of the Capital Region has carved out a distinctive - and deeply personal - role among the region's thriving cultural institutions, as a unique venue that provides thousands of adults and children each year with hands-on, up-close encounters with their own creativity and previously untapped talents. Today, The Arts Center provides a wide range of programs and services to more than 35,000 people a year.

And that's just for starters.

In addition to offering a wide range of classes in the visual, literary and performing arts, The Arts Center maintains a varied and growing portfolio of programs and services for artists, audiences, and organizations.

One of the best known and most prominent of these is an ambitious and highly acclaimed exhibitions program featuring contemporary art. Noted for both its quality and its range, The Arts Center gallery program attracts 12,000 visitors each year and has drawn media attention not only regionally, but by such publications as The New York Times and Art New England, the Associated Press and even London's contemporary art publication, The Art Newspaper.

In other popular programming, the center offers a wide variety of vacation arts camps for children and teens, administers a multi-county grants program for artists and organizations, holds professional development courses for artists, and more.

The The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is a national voluntary agency that contracts with the federal government to resettle refugees from all over the world in welcoming communities throughout the United States. USCRI Albany opened its doors in 2005, and now serves hundreds of refugees each year, helping them connect with the resources and services they need to adapt to their new homes in the Capital Region. Our mission is to help refugees become self-sufficient, contributing members of our community who can again dream of a hopeful future for themselves and their children. We act to defend human rights, promote self-sufficiency and education, and forge community partnerships through a full range of services and programs.
Refugees flee their homes, businesses, farms, and communities in order to escape war and persecution. Some 70,000 refugees come to the United States each year at the invitation of the federal government, seeking a better life for their families. USCRI's Albany Field Office resettles nearly 400 refugees each year in the Capital Region. The largest populations served by the Albany field office are Burmese, Iraqi, Afghan, Congolese, and Bhutanese refugees. We also serve the broader immigrant community with filing for adjustment of status through our Immigration Clinic.

Support a Refugee in Albany

Thank you for your interest in supporting the refugee and immigrant community in the Capital Region.
Volunteers are so important to the work of refugee resettlement. You play an important role in forming a positive first impression of the United States for refugees, and with helping them to make a smooth transition into their new home. Your help -- whether 10 hours a week or 10 hours a year -- will make a real difference in refugees' lives, and provide you with an extremely rewarding experience.

There are many ways to stand with a refugee. How you get involved depends on your skills and interests, and the time you have available.
We are looking for Volunteers to:

* Mentor a refugee for 3-6 months or longer, helping them to navigate their new home
* Teach English to an individual or family, or teaching a weekly class
* Intern in our office to support our staff and programs
* Help set up apartments for new arrivals, and facilitate donations of furniture and household goods
* Run a workshop or clinic to help clients create a resume, practice interview skills, prepare their taxes, or learn a new skill
* Prove translation or interpretation services
* Help to plan community events to raise awareness and/or raise money for our clients
* Work with a group to put together a New Arrival Welcome Kit

To get started, we ask that you attend a Volunteer Orientation meeting, where we'll give you a thorough introduction to USCRI's work, the needs of our refugee and immigrant clients, and the ways volunteers can contribute. The next Orientation will be Thursday, November 12, 6-7:30pm at the USCRI office, 991 Broadway, upstairs in Suite 223. (We're in the "Nipper" building with the big dog on top!)

If you'd like to attend the Orientation, Please RSVP to Jen Barkan, Resource Manager, at info@uscri-albany.org

This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over
Location: Morelia is a beautiful historic city, and capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars, cafés, etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35º C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

Our children benefit from caring volunteer mentors and live better lives as a result, all thanks to you! All volunteers are required to pass the NYS Child Abuse Registry Database check. Please contact Compeer at (518)462-1094x274, www.myspace.com/capitaldistrictcompeer or reply to this ad for more info and to positively impact the future of our society!

In our “1 to 1 Match Program,” our volunteers act as mentors and social friends to adults and children who are living with mental, emotional, or behavorial disorders. Volunteers interview and choose a “consumer” of their choice and spend only 4 hours a month meeting them out for coffee, going shopping, taking a drive, viewing a museum, attending any Compeer event, and more! Examples of Skillbuilders have included antique coin collecting, caving, growing indoor houseplants, cooking fall treats, creative expression through arts and crafts, and more! Inside this larger framework, each project will address the specific target group in different villages in the Deng Mor area.
Cultural exchange is the main work of the project. The volunteers will discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks. The volunteers will also hold English teaching workshops for the children of several district villages. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Special requirements: A correct level of English language and the will to teach it to kids is obviously necessary. The volunteers need also to be motivated to discover Thai culture and to present the one of their country of origin.
Leisure time: Leisure time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The region isn’t very tourist attractive as such but the nature is of extraordinary beauty: rice fields, small temples and natural parks are all over the region.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a traditional Isan house in the community and have access to the same basic conditions as any villager.
Location: The Deng Mor sub-district area is about 20 km far from Khueang Nai city and 60 km north west of Ubon Ratchatani city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries go to: www.cadip.org or give us a call:
  617-502-0400

     604-628-7400
